Toledo is a truly ancient city, with a population approaching 50,000. Known for its close proximity to Madrid, the city of Toledo retains much of its historic character and is perched on the top of a hill, offering superb views of the Tagus River and the surrounding gorge.

The most significant landmarks in Toledo include the city's striking cathedral and the fort of Alcázar, which dates back to the 11th century. The city of Toledo comprises two main regions, the Casco Historico (Historical Quarter) and the more modern neighbourhoods, which are divided by the city's walls.

Central Toledo is home to a number of charming medieval streets, with the Alcázar being clearly visible and providing a useful point of reference. Guided walking tours are also available, providing the perfect way to become familiar with the streets and layout of Toledo.
